Summer Reading
6th Grade Summer Reading
Welcome to ELA at T.W. Hunter Middle School
Each summer you will be assigned a novel to read. It is important that you read this novel, as instruction during the first couple of weeks will use this text.
For sixth grade, you will read Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
As you read, here are some topics to make notes on, as you will use this information to create a One Pager. Your teacher will give directions later on how to complete the One Pager.
- Determine the theme of the book: Remember, a theme is a lesson to be learned from the book. It is a lesson that can be applied to multiple stories. It is not a one-word answer or a specific event from the book.
- Find an example of figurative language: An example could be an allusion, alliteration, hyperbole, idiom, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, or a simile.
- Choose your favorite scene: Be able to draw it and explain why it is your favorite, as well as how it moves the plot forward (how it keeps the story moving).
- Identify three character traits: These are qualities the protagonist has, such as responsible, patient, etc.
- Write a book review: How would you rate the book? What are its strengths and weaknesses? What audience would most enjoy it? Etc.
